Clouds Forever

Rectilinear Clouds over Mr. Hopkins and Whipple Observatory near Green Valley Arizona. ©2025 Richard Olsenius

Rectilinear clouds over the Arizona mountains form when air is forced to rise, cooling it and leading to cloud formation. Consequently, this stable air flows over the 8,553-foot Mt. Hopkins, where it can generate mountain waves in the atmosphere. These waves can produce parallel, elongated clouds in the crests of the oscillations. The small white dot on Mt. Hopkins is the Whipple observatory run by the University of Arizona and the Smithsonian
